What our surfers say

Check out the latest reviews for SurfBetter below.

What separates this system so far above the rest is the precision of it. That the time is taken to break surfing down to the smallest, understandable details. And it is so often those overlooked details that hold back any serious learning surfer.

wide. It’s proven and it works!

FAQs

Explore our most frequently asked questions below.

Surfbetter.100 is a learning system designed to help you ride the best wave of your life. When it comes to learning complex things – the aim is to break them down into their smallest, simplest parts. That’s why we designed a simple matrix of one hundred skills. It’s easy to understand and also achievable. We’re not saying it’s the only way. But it is based on thirty years of teaching thousands of surfers all over the world. It’s not just a theory. We’ve been out there testing and refining at the coal face every day for the last three decades. The experience and feedback from our customers and coaches confirms that this works.

What is a skill progression and how does it benefit me?

Surfbetter.100 is a skill progression – which is a step-by-step approach focused on technique. If you wanted to climb a ladder, you wouldn’t jump right? No… instead you’d walk up one step at a time and eventually you’d reach the top. Likewise, Surfbetter.100 guides you through small incremental steps. You do them one at a time. You keep them in sequence. You add practice. And then you’ll be progressing towards that level of competency and beautiful style you’ve always aspired to. The beauty of our skill progression matrix is that you’ll advance your skills using not one, but two useful pathways – those being: concept-based learning and also competency-based progress. No two individuals are the same so our matrix allows the flexibility for you to learn at your own pace, any time you want and illuminate your own personal roadmap to help you navigate the confusing world of surfing excellence. You’ll discover a personalized methodology perfectly suited to the unique you.

Is this for me?

Yes – surfbetter.100 caters perfectly to YOU and to EVERY ability. From the calm water beginner learning board control right through to the advanced rider threading huge barrels. We’ve mapped out your every step along this journey. Beginner, intermediate, advanced – no matter what your current ability, we’ll help you discover the secret ingredients to becoming a better surfer – starting today.

How will this help me?

Surfing could be the hardest sport in the world. It’s fun – but also incredibly complex, because of the range of variables all fighting for your attention. But strangely it’s this challenge that attracts us. Think about it – if surfing was easy, would you really be interested? Most of us seem drawn to this enthralling, lifelong process of learning. Knowledge can become your gateway to exotic breaks, thrilling new positions and some of the best moments of your life. Memories are priceless and our aim is to help you achieve indelible memories of the best ride of your life.

How and when do I use it?

Anywhere. Anytime. You can start now and you completely work at your own pace. You simply pay for the program of your choice and you can utilize and use it anytime that suits you best. The video and audio lessons are designed to easily be used from either your smartphone, I-Pad, laptop or desktop.

It’s really very simple:-

1) Choose your level

2) Learn the 10 concepts

3) Watch your videos and listen to your audio lessons

4) Complete the Strength-finder tool to discover your strengths & weaknesses

5) Surf, surf, surf – and in particular, fix your weaknesses by following the practice drills

6) Think big. Aim high. Go to the next level. Repeat.

How do I choose my level?

Watch the ‘Choose Your Level’ videos on this website in order to choose the level which best matches where you’re currently at. You’ll probably be about 60-80% competent in your elected level. This means that you’ll typically be dabbling in some of the skills one level up above. Plus there’s probably a handful of skills one level below that you still struggle with and are holding you back. This is why our recommended course includes 3 levels, 30 videos and 30 audios. That is:- 10 videos for your level; ten videos for the level below; and ten videos at the level above. If you’re uncertain which level to choose, we suggest choose on the lower side because if you rush ahead, you might miss out on important foundation. Whereas you’ll progress faster if you have a firm grasp of the core basic concepts. Think of the fable of the hare & the tortoise. Fastest doesn’t always win. It can be far better to be realistic about your ability and develop a strong base-level of foundation skills first until they become good habits.

How do I learn the 10 concepts?

Watch the ten ‘10 Concepts’ videos on this website in order to learn all about the concepts. It’s very important that you understand they are in a sequence of priority. This is the backbone of your progress. It’s how you will determine what is most important for you to focus on. Even if you don’t grasp it all, it doesn’t matter because all the videos are presented in the correct sequence designed to maximise your improvement.

How do I use the video lessons?

Watch your corresponding video lessons one at a time in their sequenced order. The videos are short and move quickly with a lot of information. Therefore you’ll need to watch them several times in order to grasp the message. Understand WHY you’re learning this skill (which is written in every lesson). Grasp the message. Remember the key words. Visualize and imagine yourself performing perfectly … just like the rider in the video. Your imagination is one of your most powerful tools to improve so use the videos as stimulus for visualisation. When you visualise, only ever imagine yourself surfing perfectly.

How do I use the audio lessons?

For each of the 100 videos, there is a corresponding audio lesson. This expanded explanation offers a fuller picture and will help explain things in much more detail. The videos are designed to be short and quick to watch – a nice visual summary of the most important points. While the audio lessons are very detailed (each one takes around 10 minutes to listen to.) For each video, listen to its corresponding audio to learn the full detail of the skill. It covers the how, where, why and what to practice. You can listen anytime, anywhere … on the train to school or work, on the car radio on your way to a surf, or on the beach doing your warm up to get you focused just before you paddle out. The audios offer an in-depth discussion about each skill.

How do I use the Strength-finder tool?

Complete the Strength-finder online assessment tool on this website. You will be granted access once you sign up for any of our full-level courses (but not for individual video purchases.) Answer the questions by selecting the responses. Your scores will be automatically tallied and your three strengths & three weakness revealed. You’ll discover what you naturally do best so that you can start surfing to your strengths. But you’ll alsopinpoint your specific weaknesses so you can fix them. You might not know it yet but these are the areas currently holding you back. Target these weaknesses as your first priority by watching those specific videos over & over. Once you fix your weaknesses, your surfing will sky-rocket ahead.

What about just going surfing more?

Obviously the more surfing you do the faster you will improve. You definitely should surf as much as you can (there you go – consider yourself now ordered to go surf more!). You must build mileage – which means time on your feet, length of ride, and lots of repetition actually practicing a specific skill. By all means, there’s nothing wrong with goofing off and surfing just for fun. But if you really are hungry to improve, you should spend some time focused on a specific weakness for 20-30 minutes and really try to make some progress. Plenty of people simply just surf all the time. But they’re often re-enforcing incorrect techniques and making it even harder to improve. What’s far more important is that you gain a clear understanding in your mind of correct technique – and then paddle out and try to apply it. This is how you get ahead.

What does ‘practice perfectly’ mean?

When you do practice, it’s really important that you’re actually practicing the right things. Surfbetter.100 offers you tips to create the art of ‘perfect practice’. These are expanded in the website and include:-

-Mind surfing – a.k.a. visualisation or mental rehearsal

-Land surfing – beach-based rehearsals on the sand such as a balance board or bosu ball

-Essentials:- eg: right board, right break, being surf fit, warming up, surfing safely

-Reminders – such as tech tip wristbands or sticker reminders on your board

-How to recognise small improvements (this is very important)

-Setting big, hairy, audacious goals that get you pumped

-Video analysis – arguably the most potent and helpful source of feedback you can find

-Wave pools – excellent tool to practice with repetition

-Surfing with a mentor – a trusted external source of feedback is invaluable

-Productive mindset – get your head right to build confidence and overturn ‘shocker’ surfs

How long does it take to get good?

The earlier levels are quicker and easier to advance through. But they get harder and take longer as you move up. Author Malcolm Gladwell famously popularized that it requires 10,000 hours of quality practice to become really good at something. We don’t disagree. But given it takes that long, then doesn’t it makes sense for you to be certain that you’re practicing the right things? Understand the saying: “little strokes fell giant oaks.”Improvement takes time and this is completely different for every individual. Comparisons are unhelpful and irrelevant. This is about you and your journey. Just know that if you persevere with consistent, step-by-step action, then you can achieve great things.

To design this, we looked at the world’s best surfers and the techniques that make them so proficient. We classified these areas into 10 conceptswhich form the basis of what you’ll learn. We then reverse-engineered those concepts backwards, across 10 ability levels, breaking them right down to their basic building blocks. We strongly believe that even a complete beginner should start out by learning the correct fundamental concepts that a Kelly Slater or John Florence might employ to make it look so easy. You see – the problem for many average surfers is that they’ve reached a plateau because they’re habitually making the same old fundamental errors that will always hold them back from becoming that great surfer they would love to be. But the opposite is also true, and once you grasp our ten concepts, those blockages will start to melt away and you’ll be on the pathway to easier surfing and faster break-throughs.

Why?

Surfbetter.100 will fast-track your dreams if you trust and apply it. You’ll discover an ease, freedom and success you never thought possible. Just follow the roadmap and you’ll be ripping in no time.

Ross Phillips, the designer of the program genuinely takes great pleasure in helping others enjoy the ocean more. A long time ago after a period in Hawaii riding the best waves of his life at Sunset Beach, Ross discovered that for him, helping people is more satisfying than just going surfing for himself. Therefore we’ve determined that our mission is to help you ride the best wave of your life. Will you accept the challenge?

What is the rationale behind our ‘matrix’ of 100 skills?

What is the rationale behind the 10 concepts?

The brilliant simplicity of surfbetter.100 is that you’ll only ever need to understand ten concepts. The ten concepts are control, wavesense, judgement, takeoff, trim, weight, rails, rotation, extension and criteria. Make sure you watch our 10 Concepts videos to learn more about them. Our aim with this concept-based learning is that you follow a consistent thread for your entire surfing life. Imagine – just ten simple concepts that could progress you from wherever you’re at, to as far as you want to take this, over the rest of your life’s journey. For example: a novice could learn about rail-work in their first-ever lesson in calm water. Imbedding the correct pattern into their muscle memory from day one will accelerate them through the intermediate stages of steering and maneuvering… and… (with years of practice) eventually this same thread could help them master those radical, high-level moves that demand flawless rail-work. So beginner, intermediate or pro – it’s the same concepts for everyone – just ratcheted up at different levels.

What’s the difference between a competency and a concept?

The ten levels (level 1 being beginner and level 10 being pro) recognize competency. Each level represents an incremental increase in skill. Each level progressively gets harder the higher you go.

On the other hand, the ten concepts of control, wavesense, judgement, takeoff, trim, weight, rails, rotation, extension and criteria are all ideas. Each idea represents one of the core foundations of surfing technique and they are purposefully listed in a sequence of importance. The genius of surfbetter.100 is that you can make binary progress in two ways – by following both the concept as well as the competency pathways. This means faster improvement.

What about board design, fitness, etiquette and those other topics?

Surfbetter.100 is a technique-focused skill progression. Its focus is on the physical and mental skills necessary for progress. Certainly having the right surfboard, in the best conditions and your body in its best physical condition all contribute greatly to your success. We cover these topics separately in ten written PDF documents (one for each level). These are included with any full-level course (or higher).

Does surfbetter.100 work for longboarding?

The skills up to level 5 are the same no matter what the length of your board. From level 6-10, the lessons take the pathway towards ‘performance surfing’ which means more radical maneuvers. Most of the principles still apply to longboarding (turning and maneuvering). However what is not covered is classic, traditional longboarding style (ie: noseriding, cross-stepping etc..). When we identify that our customers are asking for this, this will be our next instalment.

What is the rationale behind the Strength-Finder assessment tool?

You’ll use our unique ‘Strength-Finder’ assessment tool to help you pinpoint your current strengths and weaknesses. We encourage you to surf to your strengths. But you’ll also identify and target your 2 or 3 weakest links – which is what will give you maximum break-through. Once you fix the root cause of a problem, then advancing becomes so much easier and those big dreams will start getting so much closer. The genius of our 10 concepts is that because they’re in a sequence of priority, this will allow you to discover exactly what has been holding you back – and of course, how to fix it. For example: it’s pointless working on arm rotation if your board isn’t on rail. But then there’s no point focusing on rail-work if your weight is too heavy on your front foot. But there’s no point even going for the turn if you haven’t built a good speed base. Therefore our system of prioritization becomes imperative to your success. It’s over-whelming practicing too many things at once. Instead surfbetter.100 will reveal your 2 or 3 highest priorities and how to fix them. Then once you’ve nailed those, you move up the skill ladder to your next priorities. And so on it goes. You’ll love the clarity derived from this analytical approach. Please – don’t worry if this all sounds a bit confusing. You don’t even need to know this. We’re just giving you some background information, so you trust and apply the process.

What the heck is a BHAG?

With credit to author Jim Collins, a BHAG (pronounced “Bee-Hag,” short for Big Hairy Audacious Goal) is a powerful  way to stimulate progress. A BHAG is clear & compelling, needs little explanation and motivates you with a relentless sense of urgency. Use our surfbetter BHAG goal-setter to get you psyched about how far you might take this. You’ll discover what you need to do today, tomorrow and the next day with maniacal focus in order to ride the best wave of your life. So we encourage you to look ahead at some higher levels and set some big, hairy, audacious goals. Dreams that would get you fully psyched and energized. Having viscerally tangible goals that motivate you is one of the best ways to push yourself towards your own goals. Also the simple act of imagining them is very powerful. The best part of surfbetter.100 is that it equips you with the skills and confidence to achieve whatever surfing fantasies you might dare to dream of.

What does it cost and how do I get started?

All pricing options are outlined here. You simply choose your program and get started immediately. We believe our pricing offers a range of price points for all budgets. It took us thirty years of coaching experience and three years of dedicated design, film and edit time to get this right. If surfing is important to you and you have ever day-dreamed of surfing mesmerizing waves with speed, style, flair and elegance – then for around $1/day over the course of a year, we have a guaranteed pathway that can work if you apply it.

Which course is right for me?

We strongly recommend the surfbetter course, which is our 3-level/30 video/30 audio course. The reasoning is that if you’re like most surfers, you’ll be straddling across three ability levels: your highest level is what your are trying to do; your middle level is where you are realistically at right now; your lowest level is what is holding you back. The 3-level course combined with the Strength-Finder tool (included) allows you to understand where you’re at and also help you rise to where you want to be, first by addressing the weakest links in your skill chain.

How can I be certain that this program is of the highest quality?

Please read a list of testimonials from happy users.

Can I see a free sample before I buy?

Yes. You can view a sample intermediate-level lesson here.

What if I’m not satisfied after purchase?

You can purchase with confidence thanks to our 30-day money-back guarantee! We are extremely confident that this program will help surfers of every ability because we have fine-tuned it over three decades with tens of thousands of students. If within thirty days of purchase, you don’t believe that you have learned a level of thorough and detailed skills necessary to accelerate you to the next level of your performance, then we will cheerfully refund your full payment.

Who designed surfbetter.100?

surfbetter.100 is the result of 30 years experience coaching surfers of all abilities in surf breaks all over the world. Today you can benefit from all of this accumulated knowledge. You can trust the surfbetter.100 matrix. It’s relatable and realistic due to hundreds of thousands of hours of combined experience with real surfers just like you. This is how we’ve been able to refine it. Ross Phillips is the mastermind behind surfbetter.100. Ross is a frothing, lifetime surf traveller with university qualifications in teaching and a 30-year-long career in surf coaching. He’s trained all abilities from beginner right through to world champion, founded the luxury travel company Tropicsurf, pioneered e-learning surf courses back in the 90’s and trains instructors around the globe. Ross currently leads a team of around 50 surf coaches across a dozen or so countries and their daily, combined experiences at the coal-face contribute to a phenomenal knowledge-bank of experience that you can become the beneficiary of right now.

How was it filmed and produced?

Surfbetter.100 was filmed with Tropicsurf in the beautiful Maldives – staying at the ridiculously gorgeous Four Seasons Resort at Kuda Huraa. This is the ultimate location to enjoy long, workable faces that build mileage and improvement. As you’ll see – the waves can be stunning. But don’t worry when you’re faced with a mushy beach-break back at home. The principles are still the same. We engaged legendary film-maker Sean Gilhooley to shoot and produce. The surfer in all 100 videos is our amigo from Costa Rica, Noemar McGonagle. Noe is a former ISA world champion. He totally rips – and also did his best impersonations to surf like a beginner & intermediate, so you can observe the clear pathway from beginner to expert. Our objective is that no matter where you are right now, you can identify with one of the ten levels and get inspired with how far you could realistically step up your performance.

Can I go surf and learn where it was filmed and produced?

Yes you certainly can. The Maldives offers surfers a remarkable range of user-friendly waves. With long rides providing the canvas to work on your skills, it’s the ideal destination to park up and improve your surfing. Tropicsurf offers luxury holiday packages and all of their surf guides are expertly trained at coaching guests under the surfbetter.100 system.
